Facebook vs. Winklevoss Twins: The Fight That Never Ends

Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, Winklevoss Twins

UPDATE (1/14/11): Winklevoss Twins Fall Flat in Suit Against Facebook

These guys just won’t go away will they? After settling for around $65 million with Facebook the first time around, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss want to give the money back in an attempt to get more money from Mark Zuckerberg and his “Social Network.”

According to The New York Times

“[The twins] sued Facebook and Mr. Zuckerberg in 2004, and settled four years later for $20 million in cash and $45 million in Facebook shares. They have been trying to undo that settlement since, saying they were misled on the value of the deal. But it has not been an easy decision.”

It turns out that those $45 million in Facebook shares should actually be sitting around a value of $140 million, which the Winklevoss twins believe they are rightly due (as Facebook was their idea, right?). But, the pair are saying they are going back to court not for the chance to get more money – but for vindication.

More from The Times

“The principle is that they didn’t fight fair,” said Tyler Winklevoss during an interview at a pub here recently. “The principle is that Mark stole the idea.”

It’s obvious these guys will not go away until they (attempt to) destroy Facebook or they get their own reality show. Honestly, it might just be better for ol’ Zuckerberg to give the twins what they want to get past the drama. With an estimated company worth of $56 billion, why should it continue to let this unfold? What’s a couple hundred million dollars between friends?!

The best analysis I’ve seen from this whole ordeal comes from Tech Radar; perhaps this is all just “good fodder for The Social Network 2.”

  3. winkelvass Twins are losers! there mad that they weren’t smart enough to make a website on there own guess what world when you hire people to do work you know nothing of DONT expect to get paid. stop crying to your family you are no different then anyone. Get over yourself! Btw crew sucks play a real sport like water polo or swimming maybe football but then again you might get hurt. Im sure with all the money your parents put into training i could train and beat you guys no problem. dumb spoiled rich kids.Go cry to mommy and daddy and go sue more people for hard work you never put in. Hey i had this great idea maybe when i start making money off of it you can come and sue me and claim it as yours. This world is dumbing down and its sad!

  4. Ben – thank you for making my day! I have never laughed so hard at the world’s worst spelling, grammar and punctuation while having the audacity to attack someone else for “dumbing down.” I think you really nailed them with that line about “crew sucks play a real sport like water polo or swimming.” That one cut deep! Thank you for taking the time to give the world your sincere and heartfelt opinion on such an important issue such as this one. I’m glad you are alive and contributing to society.

  5. the winklevoss twins has the right to sue because Mark misled them by pretending to be working on connectU. Mark knows that the first site to go online wins the game. A secondary network would definitely fail because the initial plan was only focus on harvard students. Harvard just can’t have 2 competing campus social network at the same time.

  6. Speaking as a former rower, the ‘Winklevi’ are very discreet people who would absolutely abhor the idea of any publicity, whatsover. They wish to be the best they can be, and nothing more, nothing less. I think the people opining views here are should consider their vantage point and evalutate any personal issues…

To anyone out there who feels the need to “comment” you clearly do not have what it takes…!

    (Get over it)
