Productivity Lost with Google Pac-Man

Ever since Google placed Pac-Man on their logo last Friday, people have been going crazy for the 30-year-old game. Even after Pac-Man was taken off the main site and moved to a more permanent Google area, people are still playing.

According to Rescue Time, Google Pac-Man has stolen many hours of productivity from the American economy. As the article says, there were about 504,703,000 unique visitors on May 23. This means that Google Pac-Man consumed about 4.82 million hours of time and cost the American economy $120,483,800, If the average Google user earns an average of $25/hr.

Can you imagine what you could do with that type of money and productivity or, for that matter, what we lost during that lapse of productivity? What do you all think? Is Google Pac-Man worth this amount of productivity and money lost? It is to me.

  1. I feel as though things like this do not take much more away from the productivity of Americans than the amount that is taken away everyday. All it does is concentrate the lack of productivity into one specific area. Though I do not know for sure, it seems that there are thousands of Internet distractions that people get into daily (email, facebook, stumbleupon, etc.), but when the time comes, people think, “Oh shit. I have to get back to work”. Humans become distracted very easily, but no matter what kind of distraction they are participating in, they get the feeling where that is enough dicking around for one day.

The numbers shown are a little sketchy as well. The average Google earns $25/hr? Since when is every Google user earning that much? I am a full time student with no current income, and I sent the Google link off to heaps of my friends in similar situations. There must be millions of others in this same age group if not younger… Little kids Google too. They also love video games.

  5. Murph, I can agree that there are a ton of things that Americans, and all human beings for that matter, waste time doing but it’s interesting to see how much time was spent just on Google.
